The black box collects information about vehicle speed, acceleration, braking and how you drive around corners or bends. We also collect data about what time of day you drive, as this may increase your ‘risk’ as a driver. Do not forget, the black box tracks driving behaviour for everyone driving the car, not just you.
You can read more about the way your personal data will be used in our Privacy Policy.

If your Driver Score drops below 50, you may not receive a discount on your premium when it’s time to renew your policy. You should work on improving your score to ensure you maximise the discount you could receive at renewal.
You may find it helpful to read how we calculate your driver score by visiting our Driver Score page.
Your Driver Score considers how often you drive in urban areas, on residential roads or in lower speed limit zones. Insurers generally see a higher frequency of incidents in these areas, where volumes of traffic are typically higher. This means that your score may be negatively impacted if you drive a lot in urban areas.
You can review your journeys in the RAC Black Box Driver app. You’ll be able to see details of any recorded driving behaviours that may have negatively affected your Driver Score.

Your black box detects incidences where you have braked too harshly. Multiple records of this reduces your braking score.

Your black box monitors your car, regardless of who is driving it. If you allow someone else to drive your car, you should let them know that their driving may impact your Driver Score and your policy renewal price.
Our black boxes are generally reliable and accurate. However, if you feel that the data readings are not correct, please contact us via live chat and we’ll be able to check that there are no issues with your box.
Your black box needs some time to calibrate, which usually takes a few days. The box will only calculate the main Driver Score once 200 miles have been recorded. This is a fairer way to calculate your score, rather than a short drive to the shops, for example.
