What does Van Insurance cover?

Van insurance has different levels of protection depending on what you choose. These include comprehensive, or third-party fire and theft.

The best cover for you will be the one that meets your needs while staying within your budget.

Comprehensive van insurance

Comprehensive van insurance gives you the highest level of protection. It includes repairs or a replacement if your van is damaged, stolen, or catches fire. It also covers damage you cause to other people’s property or vehicles.

Third party, fire and theft van insurance

Third party, fire, and theft van insurance covers damage you cause to other people, their vehicles, and property. It also protects your van if it’s stolen or damaged by fire, but it won’t cover repairs to your van after an accident that’s your fault.

What do I need to get a van insurance quote?

Getting a van insurance quote takes less than 10 minutes.

To get van insurance, you’ll need to provide the following information:

This includes your full name, date of birth and home address including your postcode, as well as at least one telephone number and an email address. We'll also ask for details about your relationship status (i.e. whether you're single or married), and if any additional drivers need to be named on the policy.
Whether you work and if so, whether that's on a full-time or part time basis, self-employed or other. We’ll also need more details about your occupation and the type of business you work for.
More information on the van you’re insuring – including the make and model, whether it’s fitted with an alarm, and any modifications that may have been made. Estimated annual mileage and where the vehicle will be parked overnight.
Whether the van will be used for business or personal use and if the vehicle is sign written, has any internal racking and is used to carry any hazardous goods.

Personal vs business van insurance

When insuring a van, it's important to choose the right cover based on how you use it. Personal van insurance covers private use, like commuting or doing errands. Business van insurance, also known as commercial, is for work-related use. Choosing the right type keeps you protected and compliant with regulations.

Personal van insurance

  • Personal van insurance or SDP (social, domestic & pleasure): this will cover you for social purposes only, like shopping and seeing friends and family at the weekend.
  • Personal van insurance + commuting: this will cover you for social purposes, as well as driving to and from a single, permanent place of work.

Business van insurance

  • Business van insurance with ‘carriage of own goods’: with commercial van insurance, you’ll be covered for commuting to and from work, as well as protecting your goods, or someone else’s goods that you hold in your van.
  • Business van insurance 'with haulage': this type of cover is ideal for those who carry goods on behalf of a third party, generally over a long distance. For example, a removals company that uses a van

Temporary or short-term van insurance

Temporary cover is also available for vans under 3.5 tonnes in weight. Purchased online, this policy offers great flexibility when borrowing a van or if you plan to share the driving. Instant cover available for 1 hour to 30 days, with the ability to add extra hours online if needed.

For more information or to get a quote, please see our temporary van insurance page.

How to get cheaper van insurance

The cost of your van insurance depends on lots of factors and many of them can't be changed. For example, the age of a driver. But to get cheaper van insurance, you could do the following:

Buy a van in a lower insurance group

Build up your no claims discount by driving safely and responsibly

Add a named driver, which can also help to reduce the cost of van insurance (make sure you aren’t ‘fronting’, which is illegal)

Look at the difference in price between paying annually or monthly

Keeping your business moving

We know how important it is to keep your business moving following a motor vehicle accident. For carriage of own goods and haulage cover levels, we include 7-days guaranteed replacement vehicle (of a similar size to your van), to enable you to keep working if your van cannot be driven immediately after an accident.

Flexible contact options

Make changes to your van policy via your online account anytime, anywhere. If you do need help, you can chat to an agent via web chat or over the phone during opening hours.

If in the event you need to notify us of a claim, our claims lines are open 24 hours a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

In most cases, your car insurance won’t cover you when driving a van, even for a short trip. You’ll need specific van insurance, whether you rent, borrow, or own the vehicle. If the van is for personal use, private van insurance is needed. For work or transporting goods, you’ll require commercial van insurance.

You usually can't add a van to your car insurance policy. Vans need their own insurance, whether for personal or business use. It's best to get separate van insurance to make sure you're properly covered.

Yes, we offer short-term cover of between 1 hour and 30 days. Please visit our Temporary Van Insurance page for information or to get a quote.

Temporary van insurance is suitable for general use, for example, moving house, or for small businesses or sole traders requiring short-term cover for van use. Cover is not available for rental vans.

We offer 2 levels of cover, Comprehensive and Third Party Fire and Theft. You can also add optional extras to your policy including:

  • RAC Breakdown Cover
  • Tools and van contents cover
  • Motor Legal Protection
  • KeyCare
  • Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover
  • Protected No Claims Discount

Commercial van insurance covers you for business use, but the cover depends on your job. For instance, if you're a delivery driver, choose "haulage use" to be covered for deliveries. If you're a builder carrying your tools or materials, pick "carriage of own goods." Picking the right job and use when setting up your policy is important to ensure proper cover.

You are permitted to drive a van from the age of 17 with a valid provisional licence, subject to the usual legal requirements and driver obligations.

Yes, you can cover multiple vehicles with RAC Van Insurance and these will stand as separate policies.

If you’ve turned your van into a campervan, you’ll need campervan insurance to cover it.

Yes, we can provide a quotation for social, domestic and pleasure use (including commuting) for example if you just use your van for hobbies. You can select this option when getting a quote online.

We can provide quotes for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. Overloading may lead to penalties, including denied claims if the van is not used as per the policy. Driving a van over its maximum weight (Gross Vehicle Weight or GVW) is also illegal.

Tools left in a van overnight will not be covered under our van insurance policies. Tools and Van Content cover is available as an optional extra.

You and any named driver on your policy are covered when using the vehicle within the European Union. For up to 60 days, in any period of insurance, full policy cover will apply while you are using the vehicle within the countries listed in your policy documents.

We cannot offer insurance to vehicles that will be used to carry hazardous goods or liquids.

These substances and materials include explosives, organic peroxides, toxic substances, infectious substances or radioactive materials.

We offer four different levels of van breakdown cover that can be added to your standard insurance cover (or three levels if you choose haulage use). You can select this when you get your quote.

In addition, we also offer 35 days Guaranteed Replacement Vehicle cover as an optional extra, which would provide you with an alternative vehicle while yours is being repaired following an incident. If you choose carriage of own goods or haulage cover, 7 days of cover is included as standard.

You can read more about these products on our optional extras page.
