UK RAC Car Insurance customers
From 2 August 2021 you don’t need to have a Green Card to drive in Europe. However, please check the information below, as there are some exceptions.
If you are travelling to one or more of the countries shown below where a Green Card may be required for your vehicle and caravan/trailer – please contact us 21 days before you are travelling and we will arrange for one to be sent to you, providing your insurance permits and you’ve paid the correct premium.

You WON’T NEED a Green Card for driving your vehicle and towing a caravan or trailer in the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. | You MAY NEED a Green Card for driving your vehicle and towing a caravan or trailer in the following countries*: Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Iran, Israel, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine. *Please note, insurance cover in these countries is subject to agreement from your insurer and an additional premium may apply in accordance with the terms of your policy. |
However, you'll still need to:
- Take a copy of your Certificate of Insurance.
- Take your driving licence and V5C log book with you.
- Take your passport with you – this must have at least six months’ validity on it and be less than 10 years old.
- Display a GB sticker on your vehicle.
- Take the appropriate documentation for pets travelling with you.
You may also need an International Driving Permit to drive in some EU/EEA countries. You may also need to register your trailer before you travel, depending on the type of trailer you have.

Temporary Car Insurance customers
Our temporary car insurance includes third-party cover for a trip to countries within the EU, the EEA and Switzerland automatically – as long as the car is in the UK when the insurance starts and finishes. We can’t provide insurance to you in a country outside of the EU, EEA and Switzerland.
You may upgrade this cover to comprehensive cover when you’re completing the application.
