What is Onward Travel?

Onward Travel is an add-on for your breakdown cover. It means if your car or vehicle can’t be repaired on the spot, we can provide alternative travel to keep you moving.

Onward Travel is available as an add-on with all our cover levels, and ensures you're never left stranded. Upgrade today to access Onward Travel, which includes a hire car for up to 3 days (age and licence restrictions apply). Alternatively, we can arrange overnight accommodation or public transport instead – up to £150 per person or £500 in total.

Can I add Onward Travel to my policy?

Yes, you can add Onward Travel to your breakdown policy any time. It's a quick and easy process for both new and existing customers.

Existing members:

To add Onward Travel to your breakdown cover, simply log in to your account to upgrade. You can do this at any time.

If you can’t add Onward Travel to your policy online, call a member of our team on 0330 159 8454 and they’ll happily help you with any issues.

New members:

The RAC offers Onward Travel as an add-on.

Just choose any level of breakdown cover, then add Onward Travel to that cover.

We’ll keep you moving if we can’t fix you on the spot

Our patrols fix 4 out of 5 at the roadside. But if your problem can’t be solved then and there, you won’t be left stranded.

Your choice of transport

If your car’s out of action or stuck in the garage, we’ll help you keep moving with a choice of alternative travel.

Hire car

If your car’s in the garage overnight, we can get you a hire car for up to 3 days.

Public transport

If you prefer, instead of a hire car we can cover the costs of public transport, like taxis home or to work, up to the value of £150 per person or £500 in total.

Accommodation

Alternatively, we can pay for accommodation in a hotel, so you can stay near your car while it’s being fixed.

Onward Travel can be very helpful if you break down and your vehicle needs a repair in the garage. It’s there to help you carry on with your journey.

For example, Onward Travel covers you for a taxi ride after a breakdown – which can help you get where you need to go. Or, if your car’s stuck in the garage for repairs, you can get a hire car for up to 3 days to help you stay mobile (age and licence restrictions apply).

Adding Onward Travel to your breakdown cover means we can help you stay mobile if your car needs repairs in a garage after a breakdown. You’ll be covered for a taxi home or a hire car for up to 3 days (age and licence restrictions apply). Or if you prefer, we can even arrange public transport or overnight accommodation instead – we’ll cover up to £150 per person or £500 in total.

With all our cover levels, following a breakdown if you’re taken to a garage, we’ll reimburse you for a taxi home up to 20 miles. If you have our Onward Travel add-on, we can cover the cost of a longer taxi ride, or a hire car for up to 3 days (age and licence restrictions apply).

Your Onward Travel will be active just 24 hours after you buy it. But you can’t add Onward Travel when you’ve already broken down – so it’s worth getting it in advance so you don’t get caught out.

You’ll get a courtesy car for up to 3 days if your car is out of action for repairs.

If you add Onward Travel to your breakdown cover, you’ll get a courtesy hire car for up to 3 days if your car can’t be fixed that day.

Yes – we offer a 10-mile tow as standard on all cover levels. So if your car can’t be fixed on the spot, we’ll tow it to a nearby garage within 10 miles, for free. Or if you have our Extra or Complete cover level, we’ll tow you anywhere in the UK if you break down.

Most breakdown cover policies don’t include a courtesy or hire car as standard. But with Onward Travel you can get a courtesy car if your car’s out of action or if we cannot fix you at the roadside.

You can claim once on Onward Travel per breakdown.

If the issue cannot be fixed by us and you choose not to repair the issue yourself causing the breakdown to reoccur, Onward Travel will not be provided.

If you have Onward Travel with your breakdown cover, we will provide a small hatchback hire car with 5 seats for you and any passengers.

Size of car available will depend on availability. If the available vehicles aren't suitable for you and your passengers, we can instead provide alternative transport or accommodation.

If the policy holder is too ill to drive, we can provide alternative transport to get you to your destination. We can also cover the costs of public transport or hotel accommodation up to the value of £150 per person or £500 in total.
