Multi-Car Breakdown Cover

A good option for friends or families with multiple cars

Multi-car breakdown cover

Multi-car breakdown cover lets you cover more than one vehicle under the same policy. It can be a good option for friends or families with multiple cars registered to the same address, as it can save you time and money compared to taking out separate policies for each vehicle.

With the RAC you can cover up to 3 vehicles on a single multicar breakdown cover policy. Each vehicle will have the same level of cover, and it will be covered no matter who is driving it when it breaks down.

Key points

  • You can cover up to 3 vehicles on the same policy – just choose ‘vehicle cover’ and select the number of vehicles you need to cover
  • The vehicles need to be registered to the same address – but they don’t need to be registered to the same owner
  • Each vehicle will have the same level of multicar breakdown cover

What’s included in multi-car breakdown cover?

With the RAC, you have three levels of cover to choose from: ‘Basic’, ‘Extra and ‘Complete’. Exactly what’s included depends on which cover level you choose.

For example:

  • Basic includes Roadside Assistance and you’ll get 5 callouts a year, with 1 additional callout for every person or vehicle added
  • Extra includes National Recovery and 5 callouts a year, with 1 additional callout for every person or vehicle added.
  • Complete also includes At Home and you’ll have unlimited callouts. Plus get a FREE MOT at selected RAC garages.

If you need more cover, you can also add optional extras, such as Onward Travel.

The level of cover you choose will apply to every vehicle named on your policy. So it’s important to think about how much cover you’re going to need.

FAQs

That depends on the type of cover you choose.

  • With vehicle cover, only the specific vehicles named on your policy will be covered in the event of a breakdown. Anyone can be driving them at the time.
  • With personal cover, any person named on your policy will be covered as a driver or passenger in any eligible vehicle if it breaks down.

With Basic and Extra cover, you have 5 callouts a year with 1 additional callout for every person or vehicle added. With Complete cover, you have unlimited callouts for each vehicle on your policy – as long as it’s not for a recurring problem.

Accident Care is included as a benefit at no additional charge1. If you’re in a road traffic accident or collision, we may be able to help with post-accident assistance. Just call us on 0333 2000 999 and we can help with recovery advice. We can also seek to recoup the cost of recovery from your insurer/3rd party insurer. You may be asked to pay if this isn’t possible.

Yes, you can pay monthly for multi-car breakdown cover, rather than making a one-off payment. All you need to do is select the right option for you when buying your breakdown cover.

Joint breakdown cover covers two or more vehicles (or people) on the same policy. With multi-car breakdown cover, you get a joint policy for two or more vehicles. For example you could cover your car and your partner’s motorbike, no matter who’s driving them. You can also get joint breakdown on a personal policy so, for example, you and your partner are covered in any eligible vehicle they’re travelling in.

If you have vehicle breakdown cover, like multicar cover, you won’t be covered in another car unless it’s named on your policy. But any car on your policy will be covered no matter who’s driving it. If you get personal breakdown cover, you’re covered in any eligible car as a driver or passenger.

Our standard UK breakdown cover doesn’t cover your vehicle when you travel abroad. If you’re planning on driving in Europe, take a look at our European breakdown cover. You can choose between single trip or annual cover.

We don’t offer multi-car European breakdown cover. If you need multiple cars covered while driving abroad, you’ll need to take out separate cover for each vehicle.

If you’re already an RAC member and looking to drive to Europe, you can add European Rescue to your existing policy. Visit our breakdown extras page for more details.
